A singers workshop: Sundays from 3-6 PM, Monday nights 7-10 PM
$80 per month; limit of 10 people ($60 for September & October)
Singers: take this opportunity to put your vocal and acting skills together. Brenda Varda works with actor/singers + singer/actors (take your pick) to create beautiful sounding and uniquely performed songs for theatre and cabaret.
There will be an additional Sunday afternoon workshop starting September.
From Brenda....
I've been asked by a few folks to start a singer's workshop one night a week...keep it low cost AND limited in size so everyone gets to work on one song in depth and introduce one other piece if they like. This also opens up ideas for duos...or more.
So, I'd like to experiment with the form. I need 8 people for the month of August! I have 3-4 already, but we're deciding on times...probably Sunday from 3-6. Cost for the August experiment - 4 weeks is $60. (not forever, but for the first two months at least) Yes, it's cheap, but I want to develop a solid way of working with a small group. Start date will most Likely be July 30th a Sunday afternoon or JULY 31st... a Monday night. (At this rate, if you need to miss a class, it won't seem so earthshattering!)
I'll want to see what type of work you'd like to do, and figure out what format works best - warmup, doing a round of first songs of 15 minutes each, and then potpourri.
But these are the givens: Air conditioned: (that sounds important this week) in a 700 sq. ft. studio. Not for beginners: if you have natural singing talent but not a lot of experience, this may work, but we'd like to have people that know choices for their voice to some degree. You will sing on a stage (with mike or not) - even got lights if you want that effect. I will accompany: (yes, I sight read).
If you have a specific audition coming up we'll work with that material. The FOCUS of this workshop is acting in song, developing solid choices throughout the text and music, so that you're vision matches your performance. We'll also look at vocal technique for specific song styles, and develop a solid audition balance.
Music in your key would be good, but if there are chords I can transpose in the class. We can talk about how to handle preparation so everyone benefits the most from the workshop.
If you're interested, give me a call. Or if you have any questions. The workshop will be at Wordspace, 4649 Russell Avenue, LA, CA 90027 My phone is 213-399-2006
Hope all is well with you Brenda Varda www.wordspace.net
(P.S. - I've coached singers privately for several years and worked as a musical director on about 25 shows, along with composing and songwriting for several shows.)
