THE METHOD :: THE PHILOSOPHY :: THE PRACTICAL :: MEMBER STATEMENTS
COLLAB is interested, specifically, in the following:
1) -Utilizing member facility with movement and physical theatrical technique to generate, illuminate and respond to individual projects
2) -Experimentation with language as a visual art, a physical act and a creative element which does not necessarily dominate the theatrical experience;
3) -Challenging traditional concepts of narrative in performance and including audience participation and reaction in works that can only be realized as live theatre;
-The process of devising techniques to develop new and innovative theatrical works;
-A rigorous questioning, energetic challenging and healthy skepticism of theatrical form.
Using the resources and facilities of Wordspace (lights, projection, sound & music) each artist develops personal techniques, new texts, and visual/movement possibilities in individual projects of their choosing -- but then also benefits from learning through exposure to ideas and practices embedded in other Collab projects. The process is designed to further individual visions, and give artists the strength and courage to push their own limits. And each quarter the artists of COLLAB present new work to the wordspace community --along with theatre producers and interested collaborators--with an eye towards future productions in Los Angeles
THE PHILOSOPHY
Collab is committed to the supporting the following principles of creation:
In exchange for nominal dues or monthly monetary contribution ($50 monthly or $150 quarterly), each artist will receive the following (scholarships and expertise trade available):
Tuesday nights :: 7:00-7:30 -- meltdown and conversion
:: 7:30-8:00 -- business/org; warmup
:: 8:00-8:40 -- work one
:: 8:40-9:20 -- work two
:: 9:20-10:00 - work three
(additional work session to 10:30 if needed/requested)
Each artist on the schedule for the evening is responsible for bringing in some combination of the following (probably 3 elements at most):
1) text (written, found) for exploration
2) physical/vocal exploration plan
3) productive queries
4) generative writing exercises
5) images
6) music
These elements are used to progress a theme, script, or improvisation towards an imagined goal - one that may change because of the elements discovered in the session.
MEMBER STATEMENTS
From member Daniella Dahmen:
COLLAB at Wordspace is a group that explores. We leave no stone unturned from mythology to the high-tech world of today. The workshop is what we bring to the table, it is our space to safely create our own work or lend ourselves to others. Through physical work, improvisation, singing ,poetry and creative writing we strive to create work through our own individual voices
Research and exploration is important but we also have goals to just kick inhibition aside and just do. The work can be anything from a simple reading to a more complex multimedia show. The pieces will ultimately be shaped by the individuals of the group. We want to find a common vocabulary a fresh new angle and examine actor audience relationships. We want to surprise ourselves and each other and ultimately come up with work that will transcend our passion and enthusiasm for the art .
